Hi
Looking forward to our holiday to Tenerife. We go very early next Saturday morning. Am not looking forward to flight. Think I can manage 2 boys ok(ages 6 years and 7 months), but am struggling for activities for N(4). She will sit and watch 'In the Night Garden' until the batteries run out of the DVD player, But will not watch the in flight movie as she doesn't understand she has to keep the headphones on to get sound and without sound she quickly loses interest. If she got her way, I would have to sing 'incy wincy spider' with all the actions for the remaining 2 hours and I don't think my fellow passengers could bear that!! If anyone has any ideas .........?

HA HA HA. Seriously thinking of slipping her a gin and tonic (just kidding). May have to have a double one myself though!! Am now armed with a bagful of sensory stuff - squidgy toys, lights and sounds stuff, touchy feely etc etc and lots of food. Failing that will have to walk N up and down the aisle. Nikki

Hi
Firstly have you informed the airline of her needs - not negative here but the positive. They may be able to arrange something for you. My friend flies to the US with H and the airlines have been great for her with her diet and all other things for her autistic traits too. Make sure that the staff assist you all they can.
Secondly, tell the airline about the DVD and the night garden and see if you can take on spare batteries or there is anything else they can help with.
Lastly, and not my fav thing here but if you are really worried, could the Dr prescribe a mild sedative so that she sleeps/chills on the plane? I am NOT a fan of this but if it helps - then why not.

Too late for my advice too I'm afraid. Don't do what I did - i.e. pack light and only take a couple of pairs of trousers, then give Elise a colouring book for the flight. When I got off the plane I found she had drawn a big red blotch on the side of my trousers while I snoozed!

Hi Everyone
Haven't looked on website in ages as had a lot going on with N. Will explain later.
Firstly, we did have a good holiday - eventually!!
We never thought to notify the airline of her mobility issues. We assumed we could request that her buggy would go in the cabin with us as has happened previously. This couldn't happen and we had to wheelchair her and get a lift from the cabin to the tarmac. She's too big to safely carry down the steps. Would advise everyone with similar issues to remember to notify airline in advance.
When we arrived N was a bit out of sorts - it's hard to tell sometimes, but assumed she was tired from early morning and flight. Turned out she had quite a serious bronchitis. She woke up in the middle of the night with a raging temp (seizures with this) and breathing probs. We spent 2 nights in hosp in Tenerife. They were really nice, but they don't do anything in a hurry! She was fine leaving UK. Maybe air con on budget airline?
Anyone going on holiday with a special needs child should make sure they take a credit card with a good limit on it. Turns out that we had to pay a deposit (1200 Euros) for the treatment until insurance company recieved Doctors report. At that point the hosp refund your card - we're still waiting as paperwork not thru yet. Apparently this is standard with UK insurers.
Evevtually, did have a relaxing time. Little bit of swimmimg, kids club, too much to eat and drink, kids disco, crazy golf and generally lazing about!! Think we've all put on about 1/2 a stone each - kids included!
We couldn't have managed without help on holiday - we took our au pair. This was the first holiday in a long time that I actually got to relax for 1/2 an hour or so..... If you can afford it either at home or abroad, au pair or friend or family - would definitely recommend taking help.
Turns out Niamh was fine on flight. Didn't have to sing 'Incy Wincy Spider' - but ended up singing 5 little ducks, dingle dangle scarecrow and 5 fat sausages with all the Makaton signs. I'm sure everyone thought I was crazy, but you know what?....I don't care!!
Nikki
Time to start thinking about next trip - going to CenterParcs Whinfell Forest for local Bank Hol at end of May. Lucky only 1 1/2 hours down the road!!
