I've recently been giving my daughter Omega 3 fish oils on a regular basis and I have noticed a general improvement in her concentration and ability to keep still. Its really hard to know if this is just a coincidence or a real effect of the Omega 3, so I'd be interested to hear from anyone else with their experiences.

There is a blog entry with some comments on this topic at http://www.specialfamilies.org/cant-get-her-to-sleep.html

I swear by Omega 3,6 & 9. We use hemp oil as it has the absolute best balance of all three. Advantage over fish oil is that it is organic and plant based too.
I pour a little on my son's porridge and I have it too in my museli - tastes nutty (rather than fishy!).
Soon after I started using ir my son really made strides in talking.
A friend of mine whose eight-year-old son has ADHD also swears by it.

I have tried the Omega 3 fish oil and it does work.  The concentration definately improves so I do not think it is a coincidence.

Have not tried the Hemp, but we use the halib orange liquid for my two girls and they actually like it. I tried some, it did seem a little fishy though!!

I've had a rummage around on the net and its difficult to find anything conclusive about hemp vs fish oils as most articles are written by the commercial organisations selling the oil. What I have found is the following:
  • Fish oils are a good source of omega 3
  • For a balance of omega 3, 6 & 9 hemp seed oil is the best
  • Fish oils are mostly extracted from fish liver. Even if you're not veggy, the problem with this is that fish livers tend to accumulate pollutants from the environment including mercury.

Its relatively easy to find articles about Omega 3 fish oils helping with everything from ADHD to bipolar disorder, so I'd be interested to find anything concrete about the positive benefits of hemp oils.

Wondering if there is any more on this.

I give eye Q to my son and have done for over 3 years now.

He also loves oily fish to eat and I would rather he gained nutrients via food rather than pills.

Hi Rachel

Its definitely worth persisting with fish oils for a few months as there seem to be a lot of cases where it has definitely worked (our daughter for one). If you are struggling with the brand you've bought, there are a few different ones around. Our daughter found Eye Q a bit difficult but likes the Halib Orange stuff.

All the best,

John

Hi Rachel

My monster used to have Effalex liquid.  I used to just mix it in to his cereal or his milk and that was fine.

I believe that they do work!  My son has taken Eye Q in Liquid form for the past year and has made fantastic progress at school.  His concentration has improved so much and this has made such a difference to his learning.  It is probably not the only reason for his progress, but I feel that it has certainly played a part.
